Discover Our Journey So Far

The Government of Karnataka has been a driving force in establishing the state as a leading hub for research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and skill development key pillars of sustainable economic growth. In line with this vision, the Department of Electronics, Information Technology, Biotechnology, and Science & Technology (IT, BT and S&T) was established to position Karnataka as a global leader in innovation and technology. To further the mission of promoting biotechnology in Karnataka, the Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC) was established through a collaborative initiative by the Department of IT, BT and S&T, Government of Karnataka, the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India, and the Karnataka Biotechnology and Information Technology Services (KBITS). The project, titled “Development of Biotechnology Park, Bangalore,” was initiated in 2005 under a tripartite agreement, laying the foundation for a world-class bioinnovation ecosystem in the state.

In the year 2000, under the Millennium Biotech Policy, the Government of Karnataka announced the development of a 106-acre Biotech Park in Electronic City, Bengaluru, as part of its vision to promote biotechnology research and innovation.

This pioneering initiative led to the establishment of key institutions such as the Institute of Bioinformatics and Applied Biotechnology (IBAB), the Centre for Human Genetics (CHG), Incubation Centre with a Common Instrumentation Facility (IC-CIF) now known as the Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC). Through such forward-looking policies and strategic investments, the Government of Karnataka continues to foster a vibrant innovation ecosystem and enhance the state’s leadership in the life sciences sector.

The Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC) was established in 2015 as a Section 8 not-for-profit company under the Companies Act, 2013. The first Managing Director of BBC was Mrs. Tanusree Deb Barma, IAS. The state of art centre is located at 10 acres and 36 guntas within the Helix Biotech Park, Electronic City Phase I, Bengaluru, the Centre landscapes a state-of-the-art facility designed to support the entire life sciences ecosystem. BBC has played a pivotal role in providing advanced laboratories and high-end equipment to serve the needs of researchers, innovators, entrepreneurs, academic institutions, industries, and Global Capability Centres, aligning with Karnataka’s mission to advance the life sciences sector.
The Centre currently includes a 100,000 sq. ft. Incubation and central facility (G+3 floors) and is expanding to include additional facilities such as the NABARD-RKVY Agri Innovation & Precision Centre (170,000 sq. ft., G+6 floors) and a Technology Centre spanning 60,000 sq. ft.
