Role Overview
The EHS Officer will be responsible for ensuring compliance with environmental, health, and safety regulations across the BBC campus, including laboratories, pilot plants, and common facilities. The role focuses on maintaining a safe working environment, managing risks, and implementing best practices aligned with biotech and research infrastructure standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Environment, Health & Safety Compliance: Ensure compliance with applicable EHS laws, regulations, and guidelines. Maintain documentation for audits and inspections by statutory authorities. Develop and implement EHS policies, SOPs, and procedures.
- Safety Management: Conduct regular safety inspections, risk assessments, and hazard identification. Implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA). Monitor workplace safety practices across labs, pilot plants, and common areas.
- Laboratory & Facility Safety: Ensure safe handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals, biological materials, and hazardous waste. Oversee biosafety and lab safety protocols in coordination with research teams. Monitor use of PPE and safety equipment.
- Emergency Preparedness: Develop and implement emergency response plans (fire, chemical spills, biological hazards, etc.). Conduct mock drills and safety training programs for staff and incubatees. Coordinate with fire department and emergency services.
- Environmental Management: Monitor and manage waste disposal systems including biomedical waste, hazardous waste, and effluents (ETP/STP coordination). Ensure adherence to pollution control norms and sustainability practices.
- Training & Awareness: Conduct EHS induction and periodic training sessions for employees, startups, and facility users. Promote safety awareness and culture across the organization.
- Incident Management & Reporting: Investigate incidents, accidents, and near-misses. Prepare incident reports and recommend corrective measures. Maintain EHS records, logs, and compliance reports.
Qualifications & Experience
- Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Science / Engineering / Occupational Health & Safety / Life Sciences. Diploma/Certification in Industrial Safety (preferred).
- Experience: 3–7 years of experience in EHS roles in laboratories, biotech, pharma, or industrial environments. Experience in research facilities or incubation centres is an added advantage.
Required Skills & Competencies
- Domain Knowledge: Strong knowledge of EHS regulations and compliance standards. Familiarity with biosafety, chemical safety, and waste management practices. Risk assessment and audit skills. Good documentation and reporting abilities.
- Communication: Strong communication and training skills.
- Competencies: Attention to detail and proactive risk management. Problem-solving and decision-making. Stakeholder coordination. High level of responsibility and accountability.
Preferred Experience
- Industry Experience: Experience in biotech parks, R&D labs, or GMP/GLP environments. Exposure to statutory compliance with Pollution Control Board, Fire Safety, and Factory/Lab safety regulations.
