Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC) successfully hosted the ICMR Medical Innovations Patent Mitra Awareness & Hands-on Workshop, bringing together innovators, researchers, startups, and industry stakeholders to strengthen awareness around intellectual property protection and patent facilitation for medical innovations.
The workshop witnessed an overwhelming response from the innovation ecosystem, receiving over 150 applications, with 122 participants attending the session. The participants represented a diverse mix of academia, startups, researchers, industry professionals, and ecosystem stakeholders, reflecting the growing interest in protecting and translating healthcare innovations into impactful solutions.
Opening Address and Overview of BBC
The session began with an address by Dr. Mohammad Adil, Managing Director, Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC), who shared insights into BBC’s role in strengthening the life sciences innovation ecosystem and supporting startups across various stages of their journey.
Transforming medical innovation from concept to clinic is a complex journey, and Dr. Mohamed Adil, Managing Director of the Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre (BBC), recently underscored the critical need to bridge the gaps between the laboratory bench and the patient’s bedside. Beyond providing world-class infrastructure, BBC acts as a vital catalyst by strengthening the innovation backbone through strategic intellectual property management and clinical-regulatory navigation, ensuring that Indian discoveries are protected globally and successfully transition through the "valley of death" into market-ready assets. By championing the "Beyond Bengaluru" vision, BBC is democratizing access to high-level mentorship and technical guidance across Karnataka, creating a seamless handholding mechanism that aligns government vision with academic research and industrial scale. This collaborative ecosystem ensures that promising scientific breakthroughs don't just remain on paper but are transformed into affordable, scalable healthcare solutions that navigate the technical and legal hurdles of the modern medical technology landscape.
By providing critical guidance on regulatory compliance and facilitating clinical trial pathways, BBC ensures that startups can navigate the complex validation process and transition safely from experimental proof-of-concept to approved, market-ready healthcare solutions.
Expert Session on Patent Facilitation
The technical session was delivered by Dr. Suchita Markan, Scientist-F & Head, Innovation and Translation Research (ITR) Unit and Mission In-charge – Medical Device and Diagnostics Mission Secretariat (MDMS), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
Dr. Markan provided participants with a comprehensive step-by-step overview of the patent filing process under the ICMR Medical Innovations Patent Mitra Initiative. The session focused on helping innovators understand the importance of securing intellectual property and how the Patent Mitra initiative can support them in navigating the patent ecosystem.
Participants gained insights into:
Dedicated Patent Mitra Support Booth
To further support innovators, a dedicated ICMR Patent Mitra Support Booth was set up during the event. The booth enabled participants to receive one-on-one guidance from experts on:
This interactive engagement allowed innovators to discuss their ideas and receive practical guidance on protecting their innovations and exploring commercialization pathways.
Strong Response from the Startup Ecosystem
As a direct outcome of the workshop, more than 30 startups and innovators registered under the ICMR Patent Mitra scheme, demonstrating strong interest from the ecosystem in leveraging the initiative to protect and translate healthcare innovations.
Strengthening Collaboration between ICMR and BBC
The event also marked a significant milestone for the innovation ecosystem with the formalisation of collaboration between the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and Bangalore Bioinnovation Centre through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
This collaboration aims to strengthen the medical innovation and intellectual property ecosystem in India, enabling greater support for researchers, startups, and innovators working in the healthcare, med-tech, diagnostics, and life sciences sectors.
Through this partnership, BBC will play a key role in facilitating awareness, guidance, and support for innovators across Karnataka, helping them access the benefits of the ICMR Patent Mitra initiative and accelerate the journey from innovation to impact.
The workshop served as a powerful platform for knowledge exchange, collaboration, and ecosystem building, reinforcing BBC’s role as a hub where research, entrepreneurship, policy, and industry converge to shape the future of healthcare innovation in India.
